My first attempt at a lounge chair began with prototype parts left over from the Arc Trestle Table. I’d been wanting to make a larger chair, and had been keeping scraps of the steel wire cloth from my Record Crate production to use in it.
For rigidity, the two side arcs are constructed as trusses, hammered at the anvil from mild steel bar stock into the correct angles and then TIG welded together. This triangular truss design allows the legs to achieve a semicircular arc with almost no flex.
The wooden parts of the chair were formed from some salvaged Afrormosia that had been sitting around for a very long time. I don’t often work with exotic hardwoods, due to the lamentable state of international forestry, so this wood was an interesting sample to experiment with.
