This is a particularly unique piece, built for a specific person. Based on a desire, an idea, and a couple of sketches, I rummaged through a bunch of scrap and started building. Soon I was completely carried away, and the complexity and detail just continued to grow organically.
The Magical Vanity is entirely handmade, built from a mixture of reclaimed and new materials using MIG and TIG welding, torch-heating and bending, and traditional woodworking techniques.
Originally designed to go in a corner by a window, the vanity has three legs and a curved top to intrude less on a crowded room, and a support for a plant to trail its leaves down to mix with those made of metal. It has four drawers, of varying sizes, including the shell-shaped drawer that pivots on a hinge made from a bike headset; one larger drawer on full-extension slides; and two small pivoting drawers. Numerous shelves and hooks are scattered around as well. The wood is a beautiful cherry with wavy grain that picks up the light differently depending on the angle you view it from.
A true labor of love. I would be delighted to get the opportunity to do something like this again, and see what that result would be like.
